VideoReality StoreReality store is a program involving 8th graders across the county. It is basically the game of life.
Prior to going to the Reality Store, student pick an occupation they think they would like to have as an adult, based on their skills/abilities, interests, and work values. At the Reality Store, students are then given a salary equivalent to the average monthly salary of that occupation in Michigan at the age of 28 years old. They then proceed to spend their salary on the necessities and luxuries they envision as part of their adult lifestyle. Some of the booths students visit are; housing, transportation, utilities, childcare, clothing, personal care, utilities, and travel/entertainment. The goal of the Reality Store is to help students see the need for a strong education; to learn the “real” cost of their chosen lifestyle; and to learn whether their selected occupation will provide an income to maintain their desire lifestyle.
